Where Does Our Money Come From?

How Much Does Alaska Have in Savings?

Where Does Alaska’s Money Go?

State government spends (or allocates) money in four broad categories: 1. Operating agencies that provide services to Alaskans 2. Capital (building infrastructure) 3. Saving for the future 4. Paying dividends to Alaskans
Our spending per person is higher than any other state. It is worth noting that states with smaller populations generally have high per capita spending.

This graphic shows the source of the money in each department’s budget. Some departments, like Health and Social Services and the Department of Transportation, receive a lot of federal funding while other departments, like Education (K-12) and Commerce, Community and Economic Development rely much more heavily on funding from the state general fund.

These are the four state departments with budgets of more than $1 billion, this includes both capital and operating costs.
